This week in the CFL- Week 13: Who's Playing Who This Week?

 The CFL season is rolling along, and Week 13 is here! If you're looking for some Canadian football action this weekend, there are four games on the schedule, starting Friday night and running through Sunday. You can also watch on TSN but if you have not been to a game, this week is as good of a time as any. Make sure to check out the tailgate parties before the game....tell people it is your first time.....you will find lots of food and maybe some red solo cups if you get my drift.

Here is my take on the game this week. I think Montreal is going to continue to dominate the league, and Winnipeg is not as good of a team as people think. They took a 16-0 lead against the Edmonton Elks last week...and then the Elks team bus showed up towards the second half and that was the end of that. The Bombers were terrible against the Elks defence.  

Hamilton and Calgary will be interesting. I think Calgary is a better team than their record suggests and playing home I expect they will win, big time. Tre Ford should be starting for the Ti-Cats and is very hot and cold. 

Toronto vs the Riders.......with the riders at home, they cannot afford to lose this one. I think they will learn from the comedy of errors and bad penalties last week and show up in a big way. 

The Lions vs the Redblacks. Ottawa has been a mess this year, and I am not sure it will get better this week. If there is one upset this week, it could be this game. You can never rule out a team that has a record as bad as the Redblacks. There are many good pieces of the puzzle and if Rourke has an off game for BC and the Redblacks can find a way to not only score but also step up their defence, this might be a closer game than people think. It is the CFL after all. 

It is really nice to not have a game on Thursday this week as well.

Once a traitor, always a traitor

 Here is the problem with Alberta separation. Once a group breaks the rules to split from a nation, they rarely learn how to build a peaceful society together. People who push for separation rarely stop fighting once they get their way. They build their whole identity on being angry. If Alberta separates, these separatists will continue to look for trouble, and blame outside forces for all their problems. 

A new, independent country needs teamwork and shared values. Separatists are used to tearing things down instead of building them up. Once the main enemy (Canada) is gone, they will turn on each other to see who is "pure" enough. Even at this point, the separatist do not get along, there are several factions with differing ideas about how to run the "new" Country of Alberta. Oh, sorry, Republic of Alberta......I know they want it to be as close to America as possible. 

If Alberta ever separates, the separatists will not just settle down and garden. They will keep causing friction. They will fight the new government just like they fought the old one. A leopard does not change its spots. Democracy means listening to people you disagree with. Separatists only want their own way. They want a "Christian nation" but don't even act like Jesus in the first place. 

Alberta separation will not mean a paradise. We will economically suffer, because we will not only make ourselves land locked, but we will also have conflict and more instability than we have ever had before. For the future of Alberta, for our home values and for peace, we MUST do everything in our power to get the vote out in October and put this to bed, once and for all. Because if we do not, you might as well sell your home and get the hell out of here. I know I will be doing that.

When you read that word, what does it mean to you? Hard money? Digital money that loses value? A scam?  The truth is, most people do not understand it. They really have no idea. The majority of people think you hand over your cash, and treat it like some form of investment, like a bond or stock that will produce an incredible return on investment. 

The truth is Bitcoin is MONEY. Money that is earned by people running the network. Money that has a fixed supply, that does not inflate. It is that simple. 

So why should I use this money over the Canadian dollar? Well, Bitcoin isn't something you can always use down at the local gas station. It's price moved rapidly. It can be up 100% one year and down 100% the next. Do you really want your pay getting cut in half? Well here is how I look at it. Long term, holds its value compared to the dollar. If you get Bitcoin today, and spend it next week, you are unlikely to see much of a difference overall. If you hold it for more than a few years, Bitcoin will change your life because it stops your labour from being eroded. 

So how can I have faith in it? Consider that it has been around for 16 years already. Consider that its value over time has increased. Consider that it has never been hacked. Consider that the energy put towards Bitcoin has done nothing but increase. Consider banks and institutions and companies are buying it. It is not going away.

If the Alberta Separation votes fails.

We have just 60 days until the Alberta referendum. Considering the latest polls, and that opinions are mostly locked in, Alberta citizens will be voting to keep Alberta in Canada....as long as the voter turnout is good. There are about 3 million people on the list. About 1 million of them, according to polls, want to send Ottawa a message and will vote to start the process to separate. You and I know every single one of them WILL vote. That means there needs to be 60% turnout on the rest of the voting population to make sure the "stay" side wins. I have no doubt it will happen. 

The question I have, is what next for the separatist cause? You have 1 million people in the province who want change. To find that answer, we can look back to the January 6th insurrection in the United States. There is no question in my mind the separatists are a radical group, and they will be pushed over the edge. I believe there will be massive protests, the Legislature Building in Edmonton is going to be ground zero. There are already militias training in rural Alberta for this very purpose....they openly post on social media. They are literally planning to take the province by force. They will start acting like ICE in the USA and immigrants and First Nations will be targeted. The only way Alberta can separate from Canada is by force. They certainly have the support of the American government. There is no other way. After coming this far, there is no going back. They know it is now or never. 

This is active talk between separatists. I was recently getting my car fixed in Southern Alberta and the garage owner and another customer were openly talking about this. I have several separatist folks in my circles. They are more than willing to pick up a gun if called to do so. They aren't smart enough to coordinate this on their own, but it doesn't take many people to start the revolution, only followers to pick up arms (which the CIA would be more than happy to provide).

This is a massive threat no one is talking about, right out of the playbook of the United States government. Danielle Smith and her UCP members are openly pro-trump, and some MLA's openly wearing USA hats on a regular basis. They do not even try to hide the fact they want American control over Alberta. There is much at stake here. 

The Federal Government is very reluctant to step into this at this point. They do not want to look like they are interfering in this referendum.....well they damn well should be, and they should have the Canadian Army on standby quietly in Alberta to respond within a moments notice if need be. 

Now, many will be skeptical about this, they think that the separatists will just quietly go back into the hole they crawled out of. Nope. Not a chance. They are empowered by this vote and they will stop at nothing. There are too many of them, and they are armed and ready and racist. 

You can look at history anywhere in the world. Things happen fast. Bosnia, the American Civil War are the first examples that come to my mind. We could literally be facing some really nasty stuff in the coming months. 

The Creator of the Universe doesn't need your cash.

 

It really is something. To think at one time, that I thought I had to pay God 10% of my income so I could get blessings. What rational person does this? 

Well, it isn't that easy. The Bible does say that certain people gave 10% to God in a couple places, and greedy pastors and churches (Like the Mormons AKA Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) milk that for millions, and in the case of the Mormons, hundreds of billions. Yes, billions with a B. 

My own mother in law even tells me we cannot get blessings without giving God his 10%. Is he the federal government, or what? Does God have some sort of car payments he needs to make? Payments on his debt? Does he have wars to pay for? I don't think so. 

Let's tackle this from a rational perspective and a Biblical one. First of all, 10% tithing is NOT Christian. It was a strict legal mandate of Old Testament Mosiac Law to support Priests, festivals and the poor. Jesus came to fulfill the old testament laws, according to the Bible...or in other words, to pay the price for us. Instead, it points to us being a cheerful giver. It doesn't mean not giving to help keep the lights on at your local church, or to the poor. But there is no mandate too. The Mormons are very bad at this....you are required to pay 10% of your income in order to access their temple to get the "highest" blessings and in order to be with your family for eternity. Talk about blackmail. That is worse than the mob. Any Christian trying to tell you that you are required to give 10% of your income for blessings or that you are obligated to you, is not a Christian. 

So even if you disagree with that somehow (because you don't have a drop of the Holy Spirit in you), let's just look at this from a rational side. Tithing doesn't affect Atheists, and they are fine. Many of them have the same or greater blessings than Christians. And some of our "blessings" are based on the fact we are in a western country with huge opportunity, and those opportunities are available to anyone, Christian or not...."tithe" payer or not. The Creator of the freaking universe has gotten along JUST FINE without your cash for millions of years. The Gospel of Jesus was written without the support of people giving 10% of their income. 

Today's prosperity gospel is nothing but a shame, a giant scam. People are manipulated into giving their hard earned dollars over to "ministries" that do little more than promote the prosperity gospel. You are actually funding their scam with your donations. Sometimes they give a little to the poor, but it sure isn't 10%. The Mormons love to say how they give a billion a year to non-profit causes....but there really is no public records issued, no legal statements and it's their word only. Very cult-like. 

In other words, keep your 10% and help a neighbour who needs it. Do an errand for the senior citizen next door to you. Shovel their snow once in a while. You will be better off for it.

Supporting the Canadian Football League.....is it our patriotic duty as football fans?

 Full disclosure here.....I am a massive fan of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and of my Edmonton Elks team. The CFL has had its share of ups and downs over the last few decades. Some have tried to paint the league as failing, and see the older stadiums with empty seats as a problem. In the last few years, especially since covid, I have noticed that we have more and more empty seats in the stadiums.....especially in Edmonton. I do notice places like Calgary, Ottawa, and Hamilton are also seen a decline in attendance, and Toronto....well, it has always been low. 

The problem here is not the game. The Canadian Football League is a very fun game to watch with top football players.....guys that have no problem fitting in on an NFL practice roster. There are so many athletes at a pro level in North America that the NFL could not possibly absorb them all....which is why many come to Canada. 

So getting back to the question.....football fans....do we have a patriotic duty to support our league? I would argue if you are a massive NFL and shun the CFL, you are really missing out and doing yourself a huge disservice. If you love football, why not enjoy the crazy CFL action and help water the sport here in Canada? The CFL has different rules and it is a more entertaining game than the NFL. I really believe if you are a football fan and a proud Canadian, it is important we pick a team and get behind it. That can be watching it on TSN, buying season tickets and buying some gear. 

It really is part of being Canadian. And right now we need patriotic people in this country supporting our institutions.

Traditional Fried Bannock Recipe

 

Ingredients

• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a slightly sweeter bannock)
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
• ¾ to 1 cup water (or milk)
• Vegetable oil or lard for frying (about ½ inch deep in the pan)

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
2. Stir in the 2 tablespoons of oil or melted butter.
3. Gradually add the water, mixing until a soft dough forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
4. Knead gently for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Don't overwork it, or the bannock can become tough.
5. Let the dough rest for 10–15 minutes.
6. Divide the dough into 4–6 pieces and flatten each into a circle about ½ inch (1–1.5 cm) thick. You can also poke a small hole in the centre to help it cook evenly.
7. Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat (around 350°F/175°C).
8. Fry each piece for about 2–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
9. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Serving ideas

• Butter
• Jam or jelly
• Honey
• Maple syrup
• Peanut butter
• Cinnamon sugar
• Chilli
• Beef stew
• Soup
• Taco filling (as a base for Indian tacos)

Tips

• If the outside browns too quickly, lower the heat so the inside has time to cook.
• Avoid making the dough too wet, as it will absorb more oil during frying.
• Fresh bannock is best served warm, but leftovers can be reheated in a skillet or toaster oven.

This version makes 4–6 servings and produces a crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy centre.
